Over 100 million people died in the 20th century under the rule of well known Marxists like Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and Kim Jung Sung. From the killing fields in Cambodia to the gulags in the former USSR, the issue with command economies is that they leave little to no room for competition, innovation, or expansion. Inevitably, this leads to food shortages, famines, censorship and other forms of despotism. The countries that transitioned to capitalism in the 20th century are those that are now triumphant in the global economy. By abolishing private property and allowing the state to own the means of production, any incentive for growth is destroyed, causing stagnation and misery. The ultimate test of any theory is whether it works in practice, and history shows time and time again that trading liberty for safety leads to the loss of both. Capitalism, on the other hand, clearly works as evidenced by the 99 billion hamburgers that McDonalds has served.
